Leon Tran successfully defends Ph.D. dissertation — awarded 2026 Smith Conservation Research Fellowship
Huge congratulations to Dr. Leon Tran, who successfully defended his Ph.D. dissertation on the thermal tolerance of coral reef fishes and octopus! Leon's research quantified seasonal thermal sensitivity, upper thermal tolerance limits, and thermal safety margins in species including manini and the day octopus (heʻe mauli), and built thermal habitat suitability models to forecast how reef communities will shift as oceans warm. Leon was awarded both the prestigious 2026 David H. Smith Conservation Research Fellowship and a NOAA NMFS–Sea Grant Fellowship — and chose to accept the Smith Fellowship for his postdoctoral research. We are incredibly proud of Leon and can't wait to see what he does next!
